Alien Stingers Exhibit, Kiosk and Website

Unified Field collaborated with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) on the planning, production and installation of the New York Aquariums (NYA) new exhibit -- Alien Stingers. Aiming to build affinity and biological understanding for ocean life, the exhibit provides personal motivation for supporting ocean conservation by focusing on Cnidarians (jellies, anemones, and coral) whose species evoke powerful feelings of amazement and fear.

The interactive media attracts visitors, introduces basic concepts in environmental science and conservation, and provides opportunities for inquiry-based learning, as it focuses on the importance of the ocean. There are 4 integrated interactive media components as part of the exhibit:
  • An interactive game emotionally involves visitors and demonstrates our connection to the ocean. Players experience the life of Cnidarians, trying to avoid both environmental and human dangers in an attempt to survive and grow.
  • A 3d animation portrays the sting of the jelly into their prey. It is an intricate display into a hidden dimension not visible in the natural environment.
  • Kiosks provide easily accessible information about the species and their habitat, with information and activities that supports the exhibit, and engage visitors in scientific inquiry.
  • The website attracts visitors, provides information to people who cannot visit, and supports the post-visit experience for families and educators.
The installation recently won an award from E-design for best installation, and was one of over 1500 entries, and a MUSE Awards 2003 from the American Association of Museums.
